Fabulous antique French opaline vase that was hand painted with a miniature of a little girl serving on one side and a little gent on the other. The work is done with Trompe L'oeil effect of jewel pearls around the collar and beading around the cartouche of the miniatures. The glass is white opaline hand painted with the French blue background and gold banding.
I've seen this before on similar pieces. It's almost like the glass artists did this on purpose, giving the proverbial middle finger to the employer. It was previously used sometime in it's history and so there is some wear around the top inside, not a chip but a tiny little ding inside see photo, I mention it for complete disclosure and accuracy in describing. It is unseen and no way affects the beauty or function. There shows some gold off around the top band from previous use, please see the grouping of photos for close up images. Still a rare antique French treasure and if'perfect' would demand a much higher price. It measures approximately 15" high, 4" across the bottom foot, 17 1/2" around the most bulbous part center of the vase and 4" across the top with a small 1 opening for the insert. You see it in the last photo displayed with some feather plumbs that came off an old French fan and pens, I can include them if you want, just let me know. Please enlarge photos for details; all images were taken with flash photography.
French in origin, from the mid 1800s, likely made for the Palais Royal Grand Tourist of the era. See it displayed with feather plumbs to get an idea of how it might display with millinery or tall flowers. This item is in the category "Pottery & Glass\Decorative Pottery & Glassware\Vases".
