JEAN GAUTHIER : EJG - Ezan. A rare nickel plated bronze or solid brass1930 french art deco chandelier by. The shade in thick pressed-moulded opalescent glass in a typical art deco design that unites a geometrical pattern and nine stylized roses. The opalescent semi-crystal bowl is milky bluish when the light shines on it and shows beautiful tones of amber when light is shining through, as we know from the best opalescent glasses like pieces by Sabino Lalique or Verlys. The pendant is 44 cm (17-3/8 inches) high and the bowl has a diameter of 33 cm (13-3/4).

The bowl is signed EJG France on the rim. The chandelier is in very good condition. No damages to the shade. The last picture shows a small discolorated spot which is original and inside the glass. Typical for handmade pre war glass production.

The mounting is replated and patinated. For The US Canada and Japan it is rewired with three American candelabra base sockets. For European countries I will place E14 ones.

Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first worldwar Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in moulded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned.

Some are signed EJG for. Gauthier based on the streetname of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.

Check out over 300 other French art deco lamps in my shop. Art deco lamps made in France were equiped with B22 bayonet sockets. For most countries like Europe or the US such sockets are practicaly impossible to use. For instance in the States 110 volt bulbs with B22 fitters are obscure, very hard to find and only one model bulb in very limited wattages is available. In spite of what sellers of unrestored pieces of poor quality claim in their ads when they offer lamps with bayonet caps sockets : except for the UK and Australia French chandeliers and lamps need to be rewired for your country.

In order to fit Edison large or small screw base bulbs as used in the USA, B22 sockets have to be replaced by American candelabra base or standard/medium size Edison screw-in sockets. E14 and E27 are modern replacements for European countries. An additional complication is that the size thread used in early French lighting to connect the sockets to the chandelier mountings or lamp bases is not compatible with the modern size threads used in the USA and Europe. New American or European sockets do not just screw on to the old lamp fixtures. In order to make it possible to use an original old French chandelier or lamp with modern screw bulb bases, a specialized restorer will have to re-tap the threads.

All my cleaned and restored chandeliers, sconces and lamps come rewired with the correct sockets you will need to use modern bulbs in your country. The item "EJG FRENCH 1930 OPALESCENT ART DECO CHANDELIER pendant lamp EZAN muller era" is in sale since Tuesday, August 6, 2019.
