Opaline glass is a decorative style of glass originating in France in the 1800s. The glass was produced throughout nearly the entirety of the 19th century, reaching its peak of popularity during the reign of Napoleon III in the 1850s and 60s. The primary influences on this style of glass were 16th-century Ventetian milk glass and English white glass produced in 18th century Bristol.

The glass is opaque or slightly translucent and largely appears in white. It has a high lead content, which defines it as semi-crystal. All opaline glass is hand-blown and has a rough or polished pontil on the bottom.

There are no seams and no machine engraving, and most opaline glass is not branded or signed. These types of light would have originally been found in schools and churches across the country from the early 1900s. This run of 4 is supplied with a cast iron monks cap gallery in keeping with their original style. Rewired with period black braided flex to modern UK standards by a qualified electrician.
