Rene Lalique'Espalion' or'Fougères' Vase. Designed 1927, Marcilhac 996; not produced after 1947. Patinated in pale blue; interlocking fern fronds on an opaque background. Acid stencil mark R Lalique France No. Opalescent blown and moulded glass.

Height 18.0 cm - diameter 16.0 cm at widest point. Excellent; very slight wear to the base; lip and rim perfect.

Both names are given in Marcilhac;'fougères' being the French for ferns, and'espalion' being a town on the River Lot - the name being of uncertain provenance, attributed only to Charlemagne who - disappointed at not having arrived at his intended destination - is said to have remarked n. I have been involved in the antiques business since 1971.
